My mother just called me up to say she was watching “The Biggest Loser” and the trainer on there had everyone eating Progresso soup, saying how there are so many different varieties, two servings per can, and a person can lose a lot of weight on it at home.
She thought that with my problems getting up and cooking, maybe it wouldn’t hurt to stock more of that in the house so Robin could heat some up when we’re hungry and I’m unable to walk, like so often at mealtime.
She remarked at how the shelves at the grocery store were nearly empty, so the simple mention of that on the TV show must have driven people mad with snatching them up.
Well, I reminded Mom to check the sodium content of a can. She did: 690mg of sodium per serving. The Lite version was about 470mg per serving. PER SERVING. It’s why we stopped eating so much canned soup a long time ago. Sure, there isn’t much sugar, carbs, or fat. But the salt will drive your cholesterol and blood pressure through the roof – not good for all you overweight people who watched the show and jumped on the bandwagon like a bunch of ravenous zombies without consulting your doctors.
There’s also the medication factor. A drastic change in sodium like that will make Robin’s Lithium levels go toxic. Are you on any meds that warn about staying out of direct sunlight? If you’re on blood pressure meds, certain pscyche meds, etc, then you probably are. This means that if you dehydrate, it affects the levels of the medication in your system and it could mess you up royally.
Sodium dehydrates you.
Yeah, so good job “Biggest Loser” and Progresso for cashing in people’s health.
Do it right and make homemade soup where you can control the salt content. They would tell you but only if they could make money on it.
